About The Event

Join scholar Jodi Skipper (University of Mississippi) and Chef Nick Wallace (Top Chef Season 19, Two Mississippi Museums) to explore the importance of the Southern home and cross-cultural culinary wisdom at the historic Oldfields seaside property where Walter Anderson lived and worked in the 1940s. Skipper examines the sociological complexities of the antebellum home, building upon her scholarship and book, Behind the Big House (Univ. of Iowa Press). Wallace prepares and serves a shrimp creole dinner on the grounds, inspired by coastal ingredients, contemporary creativity, and traditions of home, including those representing African, French, and Vietnamese cuisines.

Bring your lawn chairs or picnic blankets! Your ticket will include a shrimp creole dinner, non-alcoholic beverages, and one alcoholic beverage ticket. All participants must register through WAMA.

There is NO PARKING at Oldfields, so we ask that you please park at the nearby Gautier Middle School (1920 Graveline Rd, Gautier, MS). Hospitality shuttle service is provided to/from Gautier Middle School and Oldfields beginning at 2:30PM and following the program.

If you have questions, please contact info@walterandersonmuseum.org.

This program is presented by The Hearin-Chandler Foundation. Additional support is provided by the Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area and the Department of Marine Resources, the Mississippi Chapter of the Sierra Club, and through a grant from the Mississippi Humanities Council, through support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
