Mark "River" Peoples is a river guide, educator, writer, and canoe builder with Quapaw Canoe Company based in Clarksdale, Mississippi. A decade ago, the former NFL defensive back left a secure and stable career in St. Louis for a life on the North America's largest waterway. Through the art of storytelling and mentorship, River advocates for the health of the Lower Mississippi River Valley and introduces young people to the perspective-shifting experiences of paddling with, and against, the current.

THIS LAND is funded in part by a grant from South Arts with support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Additional support provided by the Mississippi Arts Commission.

"You know, you can release the pig out here, and it will adapt. And we have to adapt to things, too. If we had to, we could live off this island..." – Mark "River" Peoples

Beautifully presented and very meaningful. The connection between land, history, and people is always powerful when expressed through art and storytelling like this. It really makes you slow down and think about cultural memory and identity. I recently came across a related cultural discussion on a review blog https://grandoaksorthodontics.com/, which offered another interesting perspective on heritage and interpretation.
