About The Event

NOTE: This program is for graduating 8th graders from Ocean Springs Middle School who have already been participating in our Wide Horizons STEM initiative. If you are interested in learning more about how other schools/students can participate in this initiative, please contact Tony DiFatta at educate@walterandersonmuseum.org.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

This Spring, the Walter Anderson Museum of Art partnered with Ocean Springs Middle School, and your student’s class, on an initiative called Wide Horizons. This is a program of art, science, and action for 8th grade students on the Gulf Coast funded by the National Academy of Sciences. Earlier this year, your student visited the Museum to experience Walter Anderson’s art and murals, toured the Pascagoula River Audubon Center, and went exploring on a research vessel with The University of Southern Mississippi’s Marine Education Center. This immersive field trip drew connections between environment and society, and set the stage for conversations about the future sustainability of the Gulf Coast.

Now, your student is invited to put their learnings into action at our Wide Horizons Summer Camp from Monday, July 17 - Friday, July 21, from 9:30AM-3:30PM. This camp is held at WAMA in Ocean Springs at no cost to you, and is led by WAMA staff and visiting artist Robin Whitfield. Over the course of the week, students will conceptualize and create a public-facing art installation that addresses an environmental issue of local significance, and that visually communicates the scientific data they have learned.
