Natural Responses in Mixed Media
WAMA Art Cottage

Join mixed media artist, Dana Finimore, July 9th and 10th, for a weekend of creative fun in the art cottage at the Walter Anderson Museum in Ocean Springs, MS.
This exciting course addresses creative ways of depicting nature by utilizing a more expressive approach. Drawing from a variety of materials and techniques such as studio demonstrations, discussions, and on-site explorations, students will learn to become more responsive in their own work by learning to listen to their creative intuition. This class looks at nature and landscape from a more responsive point of view, versus laboring over an ultra-realistic rendering of the subject. Various approaches you may take include unique combinations of collage, drawing, painting, and Mixed media. There will also be discussion on structuring of composition, how color can affect meaning and abstract expressionism. Open to all skill levels.
All Materials and supplies are provided. Students may wish to bring extra paper, brushes, or their own favorite personal supplies.
Introduction to Calligraphy

Artist/Educator, Carol Hutcherson is a retired K-12 teacher with over 30 years of experience teaching both public school and private adult classes. She currently maintains a working studio in Gautier and has devoted her retirement years to gallery work and invitational shows including the Mary C. in Ocean Springs, Saints Retreat, and most recently the South Arkansas Cultural Center in El Dorado Arkansas.
This 3 hour, beginners class introduces students to the tools, tips and techniques involved with the art of Calligraphy. Learn to write the full alphabet, both capital and lower case letters in italics.

Horn Island is a beautiful wilderness area of the Gulf Islands National Seashore. On it, Walter Anderson sought refuge from the world, wrote, and made paintings and drawings of the fantastic plants and animals he found there. WAMA is preparing another trip to take 18 people on an exclusive 3 day, 2 night retreat to this beautiful and inspiring place. We had such a wonderful experience last May that we have decided to do it again. Grab your fishing poles, tents, and art supplies and join us!!
- The "Skipper" at the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor will board us at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 8th.
- WAMA, will provide sandwiches, potato salad, and drinks for lunch on the first day. (around 11:30)
- John Anderson (Walter's son) will be there to guide us, giving us a more personal experience.
- Saturday evening and Sunday will be wide open for island exploration, fishing and producing art work.
- Participants will need to pack their own camping gear, art supplies, and food for Sunday (breakfast, lunch and dinner).
- WAMA will provide water for the entire trip as well as goody bags full of snacks.
- The "Skipper" will pick us up from the island on Monday, around 1 pm.
- WAMA, with the help of Bayview Gourmet, will provide dinner on the return excursion, Monday afternoon.
Holiday Kid's Workshop

Come to WAMA for a Winter Holiday Kid's Workshop! Parents, while you're out finishing up holiday shopping, drop off the kids for a day of painting, drawing, and creating. Students can make gifts for family and friends, design their own greeting cards, wrapping paper and more! Ages 5-12.
