April 17 - October 24, 1999 Through the evolving tradition of mural painting, artists since the dawn of time have sought to emancipate our view of the world and enfold the viewer within the artists vision. Murals are expanded thresholds that defy the limitations imposed on our sight lines by architectural openings - windows and doors. Walter Andersons passionate view of the natural world could hardly be contained within the limitations of paper, canvas, clay or even walls. Yet he has left an extraordinary gift of public art in Ocean Springs, Mississippi which reveals the rhythms of the natural world, celebrates the history of the Gulf Coast region and inspires thousands of visitors who experience it each year. For the first time, the book and exhibition Walls of Light : The Murals of Walter Anderson bring together a comprehensive, comparative view of Andersons various mural projects and related works, insightfully written and curated by Anne King. Walls of Light, the exhibition, is featured at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art from April 17 through October 24, 1999. All three of Andersons major murals can be seen on permanent display at the Museum. The Walter Anderson Museum of Art has organized Walls of Light: The Murals of Walter Anderson and appreciates the creative collaboration of the University Press of Mississippi in co-publishing this book. The Museum is very grateful to the Family of Walter Anderson and the many talented individuals and sponsors who have offered their assistance throughout the development of the Walls of Light project. In this 1999 Tricentennial Year as we celebrate the European discovery of the land which is now the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Walls of Light expands our understanding of this brilliant facet of Andersons creative legacy, while it emphasizes the importance of preserving these cultural treasures for generations to come.
