Coastal Artists Reflect on Walter Inglis Anderson
Since Hurricane Katrina, part of the mission of the Walter Anderson Museum of Art has been to support the many talented artists of the Gulf Coast region. Currently in our main galleries you will find Coastal Artists Reflect on Walter Inglis Anderson, an invitational exhibition. The opening reception for this show is July 30 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The artists were asked to select a work of Walter Anderson’s – a watercolor, an oil, a ceramic work, a sculpture, or a writing, then to spend some time reflecting upon the work. The works produced as a result of this reflection are hung with the inspiration piece, or if the original isn’t available, a facsimile thereof. They were not asked to reproduce the piece faithfully or to work in Anderson’s style, but to render what they felt moved to create after thinking about the original, in whatever medium with which they were comfortable. They were also encouraged to think “outside the box,” advice which some of the artists have taken to heart; people known for ceramic work have elected to paint, some known for fabric work are working in ceramic, watercolorists are painting in acrylics or oils – making for an interesting and exciting show. Thirty-nine artists from the gulf south region participated, including artists from the three coastal counties, Mobile, and New Orleans. Works by the following artists are included: Pat Abernathy, Judy Abide, Michelle Allee, JereAllen, Leif Anderson, Grady Byrd, Kris Byrd, Michael Crespo, Charles Crossley, Mary Davidson, Zach DePolo, Paulette Dove, Rosemary Eagan, Martha Ferris, Melinda Gandy, Lori Gordon, Sandra Halat, Mary Hardy, April Hopkins, Curtis Jaunsen,Mark King, Ellen Ellis Lee, Betty Magee, Rita Meadows, Mary Annette Muneoka, Brian Nettles, Patricia Odom, Dina O'Sullivan, Auseklis Ozols, Mary Anderson Pickard, Cissy Quinn, Susie Ranager, Joey Rice, Norma Seward, Christopher Stebly, Matthew Stebly, Elizabeth Veglia, Magtillt van Thiel, Ching Walters, and Alan Watson. |
