"Between the Blades of Grass" & "SHE"

"Turtles" - watercolor, c. 1960
On loan from the Family of Walter Anderson

"Between the Blades of Grass" showed the works of Walter Anderson displaying his inquisitive discoveries of the small creatures inhabiting the spaces of the environment we often overlook. Insects, frogs, turtles, lizards, and snakes all live in different settings, but meet on common ground within the grassy intervals separating sea and sky.

"The wind went shirr-rr through the grass, and all the little blades of grass bent their heads while the wind passed over except one. That one waited until the wind had passed and then wiggled and crawled away by itself."

-Walter Inglis Anderson

Below are some of the works you will see during this exhibit.

"SHE"

"SHE" is a presentation of three- dimensional sculptures by living Mississippi artist Floyd Shaman that examines the many characters that create Woman. Viewed throughout history as Goddess, Housewife, Queen, Servant, "SHE" is a whimsical, sometimes humorous, composite of the myriad aspects of femininity.

Below, is San Antonio Rose, one of the pieces on display in the "SHE" exhibit.

San Antonio Rose

From the 1940s song of the same name, she plays with the interchange of popular music and popular culture, hosting saints of the past and possible future beneath the Lone Star and the "moon and all its splendor."
